The Giant Ramshorn Snail is not a true ramshorn but a type of apple snail, which explains its impressive size. It's a fantastic choice for beginners due to its hardy nature and ease of care. This active snail will explore all levels of your aquarium, from the gravel to the water's surface, where it will extend a small snorkel-like tube to breathe air. Its appetite is a double-edged sword; it’s an excellent cleaner, eating leftover food, algae, and decaying matter, but it will also enthusiastically devour most live aquatic plants. For this reason, it's best kept in tanks with artificial plants or very tough, fast-growing ones like Anubias. They are peaceful and won't bother fish or other tank mates. A common concern with snails is overpopulation, but the Giant Ramshorn lays its eggs in visible, jelly-like clutches underwater. This makes it very easy to control their numbers by simply removing the egg masses if you don't want more snails. To keep them healthy, ensure their water is clean, as they produce a fair amount of waste, and provide a diet of algae wafers and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach to satisfy their hunger and keep them away from your prized plants.

In the aquarium, it is a highly active and visible inhabitant, constantly foraging across all surfaces. This species is a bimodal breather, possessing both a gill for aquatic respiration and a pulmonary sac (lung) connected to a siphon. This adaptation allows it to thrive even in water with low dissolved oxygen by periodically visiting the surface to breathe atmospheric air. A secure lid is recommended as their exploratory nature can lead them to climb out of the tank.

Its role in a planted aquarium is a topic of frequent debate. As a voracious omnivore and herbivore, it will consume soft-leaved plants with zeal, making it incompatible with delicate aquascapes. However, in tanks with robust, unpalatable plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or hardy Cryptocoryne species, it can be a valuable member of the clean-up crew. It diligently consumes detritus, biofilms, algae, and leftover food. To mitigate plant damage, a dedicated feeding regimen is essential.
