Roch's Catfish, sometimes called the False Corydoras, is a charming and peaceful bottom-dwelling fish perfect for a calm community aquarium. Originating from South America, this small species has a body shape similar to the popular Corydoras but belongs to the distinct Aspidoras genus. They are social creatures and feel most secure in a group, so you should always keep them with several of their own kind. In the aquarium, you will often see them busily sifting through the sand with their sensitive barbels, searching for leftover food. A unique and entertaining behavior is their occasional quick dash to the surface to gulp air, which is a natural adaptation. For their well-being, a soft, sandy bottom is essential to prevent injury to their delicate mouths. They are not demanding eaters but should be fed a variety of sinking foods. In the aquarium, replicating its natural environment is key to its health and vitality. This involves more than just matching water parameters; it means creating a suitable biotope. A fine sand substrate is non-negotiable, as it allows them to exhibit natural foraging behaviors without damaging their sensitive barbels, which are crucial for locating food. The addition of botanical elements like dried catappa or oak leaves is highly beneficial. These leaves release tannins and humic substances, which help to gently acidify the water and stain it a light tea color, mimicking the blackwater conditions of their native habitat.
