About This Species

Basic Description

Also known as the Giant Aponogeton, this is a large and visually striking aquarium plant. Its long, broad, and often crinkled or wavy dark green leaves create a dramatic focal point, making it an excellent choice for the background of larger tanks. While beautiful to look at, its care requirements mean it's better suited for aquarists who have some previous experience with planted tanks.

Detailed Description

This species grows from a substantial bulb which acts as a nutrient and energy store. As a heavy root feeder, it thrives when planted in a nutrient-rich substrate; the regular use of root tabs is highly recommended to support its vigorous growth. A unique characteristic of many Aponogeton species is a potential dormancy period, where the plant may die back for a few weeks before new growth emerges from the bulb. Providing stable water conditions and consistent liquid fertilization helps maintain its health and vibrant appearance.

Scientific Description

Aponogeton boivinianus is an aquatic monocot native to fast-flowing riverine systems, which explains its preference for water movement to prevent sediment accumulation on its broad leaves. The plant exhibits a basal rosette growth form, emerging from a tuberous rhizome (bulb). Its submerged leaves are notable for their dark green, bullate or "hammered" texture and undulate margins. As a member of the Alismatales order, it is a flowering plant, though reproduction in an aquarium setting is often vegetative from the bulb.
