The Colombian Shark Catfish gets its name from its shark-like appearance and active swimming style, but it is a true catfish. These are not fish for a standard community tank. A common mistake is keeping them in freshwater. While often sold as freshwater fish, they are naturally found in brackrich environments where rivers meet the sea. To stay healthy and live a full life, they must have salt added to their water, especially as they grow larger. They are very social and must be kept in groups of three or more to feel secure; a lone shark catfish will be timid and stressed. Be prepared for their size, as they grow quite large and need a spacious aquarium with plenty of room to swim. They are not picky eaters and will readily consume most sinking foods. Because they are active and can jump, a tight-fitting lid on the aquarium is essential. In summary, this is a striking and energetic fish for an aquarist ready to provide a large, brackish water tank. It's a significant commitment but rewarding for the right owner.
