The Cardinal Tetra, sometimes called the Red Neon Tetra, is a dazzlingly vibrant freshwater fish that brings a splash of color to any aquarium. Its most striking feature is an iridescent, neon blue stripe that runs from its nose to its tail, sitting just above a brilliant, scarlet red stripe that extends along the entire length of its body. These are active but peaceful fish that feel most comfortable and show their best colors when kept in schools of a half-dozen or more. A larger group allows them to display their natural, synchronized swimming behaviors and makes them feel secure.
For their home, a tank with plenty of horizontal swimming space is recommended, decorated with plants and driftwood to provide hiding spots. They prefer gentle water movement and appreciate a darker, sandy substrate which mimics their natural environment and makes their colors appear even brighter. As omnivores, they are not picky eaters and will readily accept high-quality flake foods. For optimal health and coloration, it's a great idea to supplement their diet with a variety of frozen or live foods a few times a week. Due to their small size and peaceful nature, they make excellent community tank inhabitants when housed with other small, gentle species like other tetras, rasboras, or peaceful bottom-dwellers.
