The White Pearl Shrimp (Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis) is a distinct species of dwarf shrimp, not a color morph of the common Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), which is a frequent point of confusion for hobbyists. This species originates from stream systems in Asia, with its specific name pointing to the Zhangjiajie region of China. Its 'Vulnerable' conservation status in the wild makes responsible captive breeding an important endeavor.

While they are adaptable to a broad range of water parameters, stability is far more critical than achieving a specific number. Sudden fluctuations in temperature, pH, or hardness can cause stress, leading to failed molts (ecdysis), which is a common cause of death in crustaceans. A mature, well-cycled aquarium is paramount, as it provides both stable water chemistry and an established microbial community (biofilm) that serves as a primary food source. Their preference for low water flow mimics the gentle currents of the shaded, vegetated stream pools from which they originate. High flow can be stressful and impede their constant foraging activities across the bottom and middle zones of the tank.

As omnivorous detritivores, their diet in an aquarium should be built upon the naturally occurring algae and biofilm. This should be supplemented with a varied offering of high-quality commercial shrimp foods, blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini, and algae wafers to ensure a complete nutritional profile, which is essential for healthy growth, vibrant color, and successful reproduction. Though they should be fed regularly, only offer what they can consume in a short period to prevent water quality degradation.

Their behavior is characterized by constant, peaceful activity. They explore every surface, from substrate to plant leaves, in search of food. Keeping them in a proper shoal encourages this natural behavior and reduces shyness. When selecting tank mates, one must consider their very small size and defenselessness. Ideal companions are limited to other dwarf shrimp species, snails, Otocinclus catfish, and micro-rasboras. Any fish with a mouth large enough to fit a shrimp is a potential predator.

Breeding is straightforward. After molting, a female will release pheromones to attract a male. Once fertilized, she will carry a clutch of the signature white 'snowball' eggs, fanning them with her pleopods to provide oxygen. The young hatch as miniature, fully-formed versions of the adults, requiring no special care beyond a safe environment with plentiful micro-foods, such as that found in dense mosses.

Taxonomically classified as Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis, this species belongs to the Atyidae family of freshwater decapod crustaceans. The 'White Pearl' or 'Snowball' common names refer to a specific aquarium-bred variety characterized by a translucent body and, most notably, opaque white oocytes and eggs. This phenotype is a stable, selectively-bred trait. This species is endemic to lotic ecosystems in the Zhangjiajie region of Hunan Province, China, and is listed as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List. The genetic purity of the wild population versus the widely distributed aquarium strain warrants further investigation.

Physiologically, N. zhangjiajiensis exhibits a low metabolism and consequently very low oxygen consumption. This allows for high-density stocking in managed aquaculture systems, provided that dissolved oxygen levels are maintained and filtration is adequate. Its low bioload factor (0.3) reflects a minimal contribution to the system's nitrogen load, making it an efficient component of a balanced aquatic ecosystem. Sexual dimorphism is apparent, with females reaching a larger maximum size (up to 25mm) and exhibiting a more robust morphology with a wider, rounded carapace and pleura adapted for brooding eggs. Males are more slender and smaller (around 20mm).

The reproductive strategy is categorized as abbreviated or direct development. Following internal fertilization, the female broods the eggs on her pleopods. The embryos undergo complete development within the egg, hatching as fully formed, benthic post-larvae. This 'high-order' reproductive mode eliminates the planktonic larval stage common in many other decapods, resulting in a significantly higher juvenile survival rate in closed captive environments.

In an ecological context, this species functions as a primary decomposer and micro-grazer. Its diet consists mainly of detritus, microbial biofilms, and algae, placing it at a low trophic level. This role is critical for nutrient cycling within a closed system. While tolerant of a wide range of hydrochemical conditions (pH 6.2-8.0, GH 70-215 ppm), osmotic stability is paramount for successful ecdysis. The recommended TDS of approximately 220 ppm serves as a reliable proxy for maintaining this stability. A low-flow water environment is crucial as it mimics the microhabitats of their native streams and reduces physiological stress.
