The Banded Pipefish is a fascinating and unusual fish, closely related to the seahorse, with a long, snake-like body. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species lives in brackish water, which is a mix of freshwater and saltwater. In an aquarium, they require calm water conditions as they are very slow, delicate swimmers. They should be kept in small groups with other peaceful, slow-moving tank mates, as fast or aggressive fish will easily stress them out and outcompete them for food. Speaking of food, the Banded Pipefish is a carnivore with a tiny mouth and must be fed multiple times a day with small live or frozen foods, such as baby brine shrimp. They will not eat flakes or pellets. Due to their specific needs for water conditions and feeding, they are considered difficult to care for and are best suited for experienced aquarium keepers. A final important note is that these fish are known to be escape artists, so a tight-fitting lid on the tank is absolutely essential to keep them safe.
