The Snakehead Gudgeon, also known by names like Ornate Gudgeon or Chequered Goby, is a fascinating fish from the Indo-Pacific region. It has a classic, torpedo-like body shape and can grow to a considerable size, making a large aquarium essential for its well-being. This fish is best suited for water that is slightly salty, known as brackish, and it enjoys a home with some noticeable water movement. As a carnivore, its diet should consist of meaty foods. It will readily accept live and frozen options, and can also be trained to eat sinking pellets. This is not a community fish that gets along with everyone. It prefers to live by itself and can be territorial, especially in smaller spaces. Because it has a predatory nature, any tank mates must be large enough not to be considered a meal. Due to its specific water needs and temperament, the Snakehead Gudgeon is recommended for aquarists with some prior experience rather than absolute beginners. With proper care, this interesting fish can live for around five years. Its conservation status is secure, meaning it is not currently at risk in the wild.
