Stroh's Betta, also known as Stroh's Fighting Fish, is a small and fascinating freshwater fish from Asia. Unlike the common store-bought betta, this is a wild-type species with specific needs, making it a more intermediate-level pet. It requires warm, calm water in an aquarium of at least 20 litres—a bowl is not suitable. Its home should be kept clean, with very soft and acidic water, which can be achieved by adding special leaves or wood to the tank. This mimics the dark, tannin-stained streams where it originates. This fish has a carnivorous diet, so it thrives on high-quality pellets, as well as frozen or live meaty foods. It should be fed in small amounts once a day. A key feature of the Stroh's Betta is its ability to breathe air directly from the surface, allowing it to survive in water with naturally low oxygen levels. Due to its territorial personality, it's best kept alone to prevent fighting. Keeping this fish is a rewarding experience, but it's important to remember that it is considered vulnerable in the wild, so providing it with the best possible care is crucial for its well-being.
